First off, do you know there are believers you’re admonished to stay away from? Yes, believers. They’re not Babylonians and world children. They’re actually Christians, but you ought to avoid them.
I’ll tell you who they are.
Truth be told, 99% of people you’re going to take Interest in, are fellow Christians.
These people are regular brothers and sisters, just like you. They may even be young pastors or firebrand sisters.
In fact, there are a lot of believers everywhere. So, why do you just seem to keep meeting the wrong ones? The ones who break your heart and makes empty promises. The ones who turn out to be the exact opposite of who you thought they were.
They’re brethren until you get to know them. Their true character does not reflect the image they project.
You may come to discover greed, strife, selfishness, maliciousness, covetousness, superciliousness, violence, an overbearing attitude and lots of vices.
Then you can’t begin to link the brother or sister you’re discovering, to the one you know in the fellowship.
You wonder if it’s the same person that prays in tongues and divides scriptures like no man’s business. You wonder if it’s the same person that seems to serve the Lord with all their heart and is very active in a church unit. You wonder if it’s the same person that goes for evangelism and is present for every programme.
So, what is wrong?
I will create a balance here. Someone can be doing all that and will still have a good character and a life totally yielded to Christ. Someone can also be doing all that and the person’s character will be nothing to write home about.
If you use outward appearances and service to determine who has truly surrendered to Jesus, you’ll make grave mistakes. If what you love about them is their dedication to God, that’s awesome, something has to draw your attention, but find out if all they do is work for God, without walking with Him.
That’s why you keep getting involved with the wrong Christians. Because your standard is wrong.
And that’s one of the reasons you need God’s help in making a marital choice, because you may wake up after your wedding day, to discover another human being, different from whom you married.
My dear, until a person allows the word and presence of God to continuously renew their minds and transform their character, that person is dangerous. Listen, what makes a person true is how the person manifests the fruits of the Holy Spirit, not how the person speaks in tongues.
1 Corinthians 13 says that you can manifest all the gifts in heaven and earth, but without the fruit of love to begin with, you’re not doing well. Same extends to the rest of the gifts.
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are wonderful and beautiful. But do realise that someone can have all the gifts and still be far from God. The fruits of the Holy Spirit make a transformed believer.
In 2 Thessalonians 3:6, Paul says to the brethren: “Beloved brothers and sisters, we instruct you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to stay away from believers who are unruly and who stray from all that we have taught you.”
Yes, these people are believers. Yes, they manifest the gifts. Yes, they work in the church, but they’re unruly. These ones have not truly surrendered to the Lordship of Christ. Stay away from them.
Of course people make mistakes, so you can’t use one unguarded moment to jump to conclusions. Observe them closely. If you have the spirit of discernment, you’ll know what character disposition is a pattern and which is a mistake. The red alert will flash.
Even in the mistakes, there are things a transformed believer can never do. Stop making excuses and trying to justify certain behaviors that are red signals for you to disappear. Yes, you may understand, yes you may help them out, but you know what character dispositions that are simply marks of a life not yielded to Christ. Do not yoke yourself with such a person.
Change your standard for determining whose life is surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and who is just managing Him as a saviour.
In Acts 4:13, when people observed Peter and John, they concluded that these men have been with Jesus. There is no way you can truly meet Jesus without the evidence showing in your life. The degree to which dead works manifest in you, determines whether you’re truly with Jesus or just going through the motions, without any real transformation.
May the Lord help us in Jesus name.
God bless you.
